VIDI Introduces Expressions Animation Technology.

VIDI-Strata Alliance Press Release.

VIDI Joins Strata At MacWorld

In the January issue of The 3D View, I am pleased to announce some major technology advances and strategic moves designed to move VIDI in 1998 into the forefront of character animation.

In 1997, 3D character animation had a major start in movies with Disney's Toy Story and TV with Reboot. In 1998, I see 3D character animation rapidly advancing in movie, video, game, and multimedia production.

VIDI is curently working on developing an advanced Behavioral Kinematics(tm) technology to be released in the first quarter of 1998 as KineMagics Pro(tm), that will make it easier to do professional facial, character, and lip-synching animation. To expand the base and increase the market for VIDI's new character and facial animation technology, VIDI has entered into a strategic alliance agreement with Strata. Together, both companies will work to extend this technology to Strata's StudioPro product and promote it to the animation market. To kickoff the marketing campaign, VIDI and Strata have produced a joint press release and introduced the technology at the 1998 MacWorld in San Francisco.

With the technological advances and strategic moves we are making, VIDI will be in a strong position to make a significant contribution to this growing market. I am excited with VIDI's prospects and look forward to meeting you at MacWorld.

Best Wishes for a Happy New Year.

Nick Pavlovic

VIDI Introduces Advanced Expressions Animation Technology

It's well know that 3D character animation presents one of the toughest challenges for desktop animators. Usually considered the domain of high-end products like Wavefront and SoftImage on expensive workstations, demand for this technology has been increasing steadily, especially since the release of Disney's Toy Story. Inverse Kinematics (IK) has been the primary technology used in providing joined motion for control of movement of the body and limbs. However, character animation has had limited success on the desktop. Most desktop IK implementation are difficult to learn and use and often produce strange results such as limbs being placed in unrealistic positions. Compounding this is that the skin at bend points doesn't look natural because it is either wrinkled or has a severe line of intersection. VIDI's new KineMagics Pro(tm) to be released in the first quarter of 1998 provides Behavioral Kinematics which lets you blend individual object instances into behavioral expressions for character, facial, or lip sync animation. Since all key target instances are preset and the blended expressions have been previewed in real-time to determine behavioral accuracy, the resulting animations provide more predictable motion and smoother surfacing at the bend points then is possible with most applications using only IK technology.

VIDI's KineMagics Pro with it's innovative Behavioral Kinematics capability takes advantage of existing 3D Digital Clayª sculpting capability within Modeler to provide powerful character, facial, and lip sync animation. The key to KineMagics Pro's Behavioral Expressions is the ability to convert an unlimited number of freeform morph shapes and shape rotations into instances which can be combined to form complex facial expressions and poses that can be controlled by a single slider. To create facial expressions and character motion with many other products, the only alternative is to sculpt hundreds or thousands of key poses individually. The real-time Expressions interface allows you to easily select, see, and change the blending of targets in real-time to get the desired expression at any point in the animation.

For a more in depth analysis of VIDI's Behavioral Kinematics for character, facial, and lip syncing animation, see the Expert and the Tech Reports areas on the VIDI site at http://www.vidi.com. In the Animators section, you will find a description of the process used in simulating the flight of geese similar to the effect used in the movie Fly Away Home, except that it took only a few hours to create.

VIDI and Strata Announce Strategic Alliance

On December 23rd, VIDI and Strata issued a joint press release announcing a strategic relationship between the two companies. The two companies will join their respective development staffs to extend VIDI's character animation technology to Strata's StudeioPro product and their marketing staffs to intrduce this capability to the market. The statement of the press release is as follows:

---------------------------------------------------

VIDI Joins Strata With Advanced Animation Plug-in That Adds Sophisticated, Expression-Based Character Animation to StudioPro(tm)

St. George, Utah, December 23, 1997 -- Strata Inc., developers of award-winning 3D design, multimedia and digital video software, and California-based Visual Information Development Inc. today announced that VIDI is creating a new character animation extension for StudioPro, Strata's flagship modeling, rendering, and animation package. VIDI's advanced 3D morphing technology will provide StudioPro with powerful facial animation, muscle flexing, character reshaping, and lip-synching capabilities.

"We're very pleased that VIDI has joined Strata in a strategic alliance and we give them a hearty welcome. The morph-instancing capabilities that VIDI brings will add a core piece of technology to our product line. This is one more example of StudioPro's extensibility and the flexibility and growth potential that are designed into the 2.x generation from the ground up." -- Ken Bringhurst, Strata CEO

VIDI's plug-in will work within StudioPro's existing animation framework as a dynamic object modifier. Independent facial movements, hand gestures, and any other body actions can be synched together into an "expression" and saved for future use. An entire library of such expressions that portray anger, joy, surprise, fear, etc. can be mixed and matched in any combination and applied to a character model to achieve amazingly lifelike results. This expression-based method of character animation is far less demanding of resources and time than traditional methods and greatly speeds up production. The plug-in will be developed first for the Power Macintosh platform, followed by a Windows version.

"Strata is clearly one of the winners in the 3D and DV worlds and we're thrilled to be onboard the fast-moving StudioPro train. Coupling VIDI technology with such a feature-rich package creates a sleek, muscled-up animation engine. Our instancing or "expression-based" character animation allows the definition of complex facial expressions and body movements. This new morphing technology provides the high-end effects previously found only with much more expensive workstation-based products, but at far less cost and with fewer headaches. Moreover, we see this as just the first in a series of sophisticated plug-ins working exclusively with StudioPro. There's a lot more on the track ahead." -- Nick Pavlovic, VIDI CEO

Character animation is one of the most difficult tasks facing a 3D artist. VIDI's first StudioPro extension features intuitive slider controls and instant preview capability to make it much easier for an animator to synchronize a character's facial movements with lip movement and other gestures.

"VIDI's new expression-based method is ideal for creating and animating facial expressions as well as showing 3D characters talking. Changing a character's expression is easy. It's simply a matter of applying instances in various combinations at selected keyframes." -- Peter Ratner, Professor of Fine Art and Animation, James Madison University

More VIDI-produced plug-ins are also slated during the coming year that will join a series of other StudioPro extensions either developed in-house or by other outside developers. All will be shipped in both Macintosh and Windows versions. Strata will be demonstrating the VIDI animation technology at San Francisco's MacWorld trade show in January in booth #1907.

Strata Inc. is a closely-held corporation based in St. George, Utah.
