Type and Bevel Extrude Tool Use
The Bevel Extrude tutorial shows you how to use the Type tool for creating the 2D type outlines which can be extruded by the Bevel Extrude tool using selected or free-form bevels.
Type Tool
- Click on the color swatch and select a color for your type.
- Click on the Type Tool (T) and go to the top of your screen to the Type Tool Info Palette.
- Click on the pop-up button on the top left of the Info Palette and select a type face.
- Next to the pop-up button in the Type Tool Info Palette, you should see an empty space with a blinking type insertion cursor. Type your word in this space.
- Go to the Front Window with the Type Tool and click in the top left corner and drag down to make the type box. You should now see the type in the front window. Use the corner squares to adjust the size of the type.
- Click the Engage button at the top left of the Type Tool Info Palette.
NOTE: You should now have 2D type. The next step will teach you how to make the type 3D as well as teach you the Bevel Extrude Tool.
Bevel Extrude
NOTE: Bevel Extrude takes a 2D object and extrudes it while adding angles or curves to the front and/or back.
- In the Groups palette, select the name of the type that you just created in the previous steps.
- Select the Bevel Extrude Tool (Illustration 1).
- At the top of the screen you should see the Bevel Extrude Info Palette (Illustration 23). Click on the pop-up button next to Style: and select the type of bevel that you want.

- After selecting the type of bevel, click on the Edit button on the far left of the Bevel Extrude Info Palette.
NOTE: In the Bevel Extrude dialogue box, (Illustration 24) you can click and drag the points to edit your bevel.
- Once you are finished, click OK.

NOTE: The first letter shows what the bevel will look like. To save memory, the program only shows the first letter.
- In the Bevel Extrude Info Palette you can click either In or Out to make the bevel go inward or outward.
- You can also set the Depth of the bevel in the Bevel Extrude Info Palette.
- Next to the Depth setting of the Bevel Extrude Info Palette, you will see a ruler type tool with a small triangle at the bottom. You can slide the triangle to set the thickness of the bevel.
- Once you are finished making the bevel settings, press the Bevel button in the Bevel Extrude Info Palette (Illustration 24) to produce the results shown in Illustration 25.
